A St. John man collected more than $225,000 over nine years because he was disabled.

However, federal attorneys say Jerald W. Markward, 62, was well enough to start working again in 2011, running his own refrigerator repair company, income he never reported to the federal government.

He's now charged with one count each of theft of government money and Social Security fraud, according to an indictment filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court in Hammond.

It was not clear from court records if he had been arrested or made an initial appearance as of Thursday afternoon.

According to the indictment, Markward was approved in January 2006 to start receiving Social Security disability payments after he appealed a prior ruling. To receive the disability payments, he had to prove he could not perform substantial work and made less than anywhere from $860 to $1,090 a month.
