Social Security is a program that provides benefits to retired people, those who are unemployed or disabled. In the Rio Grande Valley, 117,530 people over the age of 65 receive it.
The average amount the government gives to seniors who receive Social Security is $435.18.
“It’s very difficult, if not impossible,” 72-year-old Cathy Judge said. She’s living off the check the government sends her. It’s paid the bills for 10 years.
“I’m way behind on property tax because there is no way I can meet my everyday expenses, plus pay off like $4,000 in back taxes,” she said.
Judge makes around $719 a month from her Social Security checks. However, the money doesn’t last too long after bills.
