After mounting loyal opposition on both sides of the gun issue every year during the Virginia General Assembly session, advocates and lawmakers still don’t see eye to eye, but they’re not trying to gouge them out.
Perhaps that’s why Sen. L. Louise Lucas, D-Portsmouth — a gun control advocate — gave Phil Van Cleave, head of the pro-gun Virginia Citizens Defense League, a hug during Wednesday’s Senate Courts of Justice Committee hearing, as Lucas was presenting a gun show background check bill that Van Cleave had risen to oppose.
“You’re always such a sweet lady,” Van Cleave told her.
“In that case, why don’t you just sit down?” Lucas responded, before offering her pistol-packing opponent a hug.
Lucas’ bill was rejected by the Republican-controlled committee.
